The Metronom Inside the Brain

Trained musicians are able to reproduce arbitrary rhythms at arbitrary speeds. There must be a metronom-like oscillator in the brain that can be tuned and locked to arbitrary frequencies. Untrained musicians tend to accelerate the speed when reproducing a rhythmic pattern. If the beats of a rhythm are too far apart in time, a "silent beat" is used to help the musician keeping in time.
